There are two types of termites, drywood and subterranean. Both species of termites look very similar to flying ants, so we recommend a thorough inspection for a firm identification. Drywood termites can chew through support beams, floors and walls, causing expensive home repairs. Drywood termites usually swarm on sunny, warm days after a sudden rise in temperature. Subterranean termites live below ground and are by far the most destructive termite species. The hard, saw-toothed jaws of termites work like shears and are able to bite off extremely small fragments of wood, one piece at a time. Over time, they can collapse a building entirely, meaning possible financial ruin for a homeowner. Both eat away the wood inside your home, which can eventually damage its structural integrity.

If you notice any of these signs, there’s a good chance you may have a termite infestation:

Wood damage is probably the most well-known sign that termites are eating away at your house. If you find or break open a piece of wood that is layered or carved out, you can bet you’re dealing with termites. Severely damaged wood will sound hollow.

Mud tubes along baseboards, walls or in cracks and crevices indicate subterranean termites.

Piles of coarse grains of sand appearing mysteriously are likely drywood termite fecal pellets a.k.a frass.

Unexplained cracks in both exterior and interior walls, rafters, beams, and ceilings, as well as wooden fence posts and decking, could mean termites are present.

Blistering, sagging laminate flooring could be a sign that termites are at work underneath the the floorboards. A spongy or bouncy floor is also a cause for alarm.

Sticking windows and doors can indicate that termites are tunneling inside the frames.
